Members of Parliament
We respectfully call upon Members of Parliament to:
• Formally acknowledge the legislative gap created by the current scope of Section 76 of the Serious Crime Act 2015;
• Introduce or support a Private Member’s Bill to amend the Act in accordance with the proposals set out in this document;
• Table written questions to the Secretary of State for Justice and the Home Secretary requesting a review of Section 76 and its scope;
• Support a referral to the Law Commission for a formal review of coercive control legislation in institutional and organisational settings; and
• Engage with constituents, advocacy groups, and survivors who have been affected by organisational coercive control.
Organisations
We call upon charities, advocacy organisations, and professional bodies to:
• Formally endorse this proposal and add their voice to calls for legislative reform;
• Share evidence from their work of the impact of organisational and institutional coercive control on victims;
• Collaborate on a coordinated campaign to secure a parliamentary debate and government response; and
• Commission or share research that documents the prevalence and impact of organisational coercive control in the United Kingdom.
Members of the Public
We call upon individuals to:
• Sign and share our petition calling on the Government to review and expand Section 76 of the Serious Crime Act 2015;
• Write to their local Member of Parliament requesting that they support this reform;
• Share their personal experiences, where they feel safe and comfortable to do so, to help build the evidence base for reform. You can do this by contacting micah@stillconnected.org.uk; and
• Raise awareness of this issue within their communities, workplaces, and networks.
